The Reasons Your Air Conditioner Is Leaking Water
June 15, 2020 8:07 pm Leave your thoughtsIf you’ve ever noticed a puddle of water underneath your running air conditioner, you should know the difference between a normal amount of water versus the signs of a major problem. Some condensation is normal, but if you’re dealing with a large puddle leaking from your air conditioner, you might need to call an HVAC contractor.
Here’s how to tell why your air conditioner is leaking in Oklahoma City, OK, and when to call in the pros:
- You’re running the AC when it’s cold: Sometimes we continue to run the air conditioner, even when it’s cold outside. This can cause the coils to freeze, which will leak water underneath the unit when they warm up and melt. Generally, you should make sure to turn the AC off for the season when the temperature is below 60 degrees Fahrenheit.
- A drain line has disconnected: Sometimes air conditioners are installed poorly, or parts come loose over time. When your drain line disconnects, your Oklahoma City, OK AC can begin leaking water from underneath the unit, causing puddles.
- Your condensate drain is cracked: Sometimes your drain pan will crack from normal wear and tear (and age). Cracked pans are no longer properly sealed, so water can leak out from the air conditioner.
- Your filters are dirty: You’re changing your air filter at least every three months, right? If you’re not, you could be causing your air conditioner to work much harder than it should. Dirty air filters don’t allow enough air to pass through, which can make the evaporator coils too cold. They’ll freeze over, leaving behind puddles. This is one of the easiest maintenance tasks you can perform yourself, so make sure you set a calendar reminder every three months. (You should change it more frequently if you have pets in the home, or if you suffer from allergies or asthma.)
- Your drain or drain line have clogged: Sometimes air conditioners can clog, thanks to dirt, debris, mold or algae. When the drain or drain line clog, the air conditioner overflows and leaks water. To avoid this, make sure that you have an HVAC contractor inspect your heater and air conditioner twice per year—it will save you a lot of time and hassle later on down the road.
- The refrigerant levels are low: If you don’t have enough refrigerant in your system, the evaporator coil can freeze. When the frozen coil melts, water leaks out of your air conditioner. Listen for a hissing or bubbling noise when the air conditioner is operating. If your AC isn’t cooling as well as it used to, it could be a case of low refrigerant.
Depending on how severe your problem is, your AC leaking in Oklahoma City, OK might be fixed with a simple repair or by swapping out the air filter.
